Token

[Hany's take] Column: Hany's Blog Review | Date: 2026-10-04 | Keywords: AI-eSIM, token economy, telecom operators, compute, China Mobile, 鄭哥 Hany
Intro: A phone used to be a communication tool — what has it turned into now?
I started in export in 1998. Back then the things that mattered most were which fax machine was faster and when the guy would get to Shenzhen.
Today the young people around me ask: "Hany, is your phone an AI device yet?"
I look at my Huawei Mate, sigh, and say: "I'm still learning."
Generations are turning over faster than the container cycles we worked to in the old export days.
Act 1: One eSIM upgraded into an AI gateway — how China Mobile is laying it out
On May 8, 2026, China Mobile held its "2026 Mobile Cloud Conference" in Shanghai.
Reading the news, I came across a product launch that interested me — AI-eSIM.
China Mobile explains it this way: through chip-level innovation, every terminal device can get a trusted digital identity, and then built-in model capability, so that one tap upgrades the eSIM into an AI gateway.
Deputy General Manager Chen Huaida put it plainly:
"AI-eSIM can be used in smart toys, smart home appliances, smart glasses, drones, robots and many other scenarios, so that AI devices are 'online the moment they power on, and intelligent the moment they are online.'"
In the language of our trade: a phone used to serve a human being; now a phone is itself an agent (AI Agent).
You say to the phone: "Order 100,000 Christmas toys for me."
The phone does the whole thing itself — finds factories, analyses prices, generates the contract, arranges shipment.
This is the front door of the token economy.
Act 2: Telecom operators going from "selling bytes" to "selling tokens" — is it essentially the same thing?
Anyone in trade knows: whoever controls the distribution channel is king.
In the voice era, operators sold minutes — you made a call and paid by the minute.
In the data era, operators sold GB — you went online and paid by the gigabyte.
In the token era, what do operators sell?
They sell the intelligence of AI inference and generation.
Customers no longer pay simply for bandwidth or for GPU time; they pay for what the AI produces.
This is a fundamental change in the unit of billing.
But — 26 years in business — I know how hard this kind of shift is.
The operators' advantages:
- Network determinism: the model is deployed in the operator's own data centre and users reach it over the operator's network, so optimisation can happen end to end at the network layer — low latency, high stability
- 1.8 billion consumer users plus 73 million government and enterprise customers — a sales reach network. Those of us in trade know that building a distribution channel is the most expensive part; they already have it
- Decades of experience running tariff plans — tiered pricing, prepaid models; they have been playing that game for decades
The problems:
- The org structure was designed for a telecom network, not for an AI application ecosystem
- The talent base is mostly telecom engineers, not AI application developers
- The culture is a telecom company culture, not an internet company culture
The fate of becoming a "dumb pipe" cannot be escaped just by launching a few more tariff plans.
Act 3: AI-eSIM is the real breakthrough — chip-level innovation is the core
I went carefully through the technical description of AI-eSIM, and saw that they stress "chip-level innovation".
That detail matters a great deal.
The old eSIM was just a very small chip holding the operator's network credentials.
Today's AI-eSIM has model capability built into the chip itself — no trip to the cloud needed; the device is an agent in its own right.
That change overturns three things:
First: latency disappears.
All AI inference happens locally, with no round trip to the cloud — voice commands, robot-arm control, drone navigation, all responding instantly.
Second: privacy.
Medical data, factory process parameters, financial information — none of it has to go to the cloud; it is processed locally on the device, and the data never leaves the factory.
Third: offline intelligence.
Remote mining areas, offshore oil fields, field work — in the past, no network meant no AI; now, as long as there is power, the device itself is the AI expert.
Those three overthrows are things cloud AI can never pull off.
Act 4: The operators' real test — how closed the ecosystem is decides the value
People in export are best at one thing: judging.
Is a platform a closed ecosystem or an open one?
The more closed — the more valuable.
The more open — the faster it gets wiped out.
The operators' AI-eSIM ecosystem comes down to two things:
First: how tightly devices are bound to it.
If AI-eSIM only works on China Mobile's network, it is a closed ecosystem, and it is worth money.
If AI-eSIM works across operators, it is an open ecosystem, and it slowly turns into just another "data bundle".
Second: control over the application ecosystem.
If the operator can build its own app store and AI service platform, it is the Apple model, and it is worth money.
If the operator only provides the basic pipe and the applications are all third-party, it is the Android model, and margins get squeezed.
My call: AI-eSIM is a meaningful attempt, but the operators' DNA means they will find it hard to become the Apple of the AI era.
Apple succeeded not only because it has chips, but because it has control of an entire ecosystem — that came from decades of accumulated internet thinking, and a few 5G base stations will not get you there.
Hany's Three Sentences
First: AI-eSIM is a meaningful piece of technical innovation, but it is not the operators' lifeline. Chip-level innovation lets a terminal run AI locally, and that direction is right. But from "technical innovation" to "commercial success" is an enormous distance — ecosystem building, user habits, industry standards; every gate is a major exam.
Second: the real value of the token economy is not in the token itself, but in how closed the ecosystem is. When every operator wants to be Apple but not one of them has Apple's grip on an ecosystem, the result is that they all sell the same commoditised basic service, prices grind against each other, and margins get thinner. Those of us in trade have seen that film plenty of times.
Third: how can we make use of this trend? If you are a manufacturer, watch the industrial IoT devices inside the AI-eSIM ecosystem — that may be the next opening in factory intelligence. If you are a software developer, consider building local AI applications for AI-eSIM devices — that is a new lane. But whatever you do, remember: infrastructure suppliers earn hard money; ecosystem builders earn the big money.
In one sentence
AI-eSIM turns every terminal device into an AI gateway, and telecom operators have finally found a technical handle to escape the "dumb pipe" fate. But technical innovation is not commercial success — the operators have network advantages and channel advantages; what they lack is internet ecosystem DNA. The value of the token economy depends on how closed the ecosystem is: a closed ecosystem is the Apple model, an open one is the data-bundle model. Before you choose an operator to work with, ask first: how tightly can you be tied in?
