A client came in with a sample in his hand: “I guarantee you 5,000 dollars. Turn this concept into a product for me?”
Bloody hell. 5,000 dollars? Do you know what a mould costs? Pure fantasy. And the deposit he was offering was pitifully small.
Then we went for tea and I sat there saying nothing. From the next table, a voice: “Hey honey, this one's good.”
That one sentence made me think harder — actually, it might just work.
I told him: “Fine. 5,000 dollars. Sell me the patent. Leave the thing with me and I'll take it to production.”
But I'm a businessman — of course I keep a way out.
I knew the foreigner would sign right away, so I signed with him. I took the money, but I said: “I'll do 500 samples first

Because I took the technology inside his sample and developed a different model of my own. I was afraid he would sue me, so I had to change it enough to look nothing like his.
The result? That 5,000 dollars bought more than a patent. It bought a ticket into the whole industry.

Everything above really happened, but it is only the tip of the iceberg.
The truth is, the “design” the foreign client handed me could not be built at all. The screen was too small, the battery too heavy, the keys too cramped and tiny. Wearing it on your wrist felt like having a brick strapped on. If I had really built it to his spec, the whole thing was dead.
So I did three things:
Redesigned it — threw out his entire shell, doubled the screen, made the keys easy to press, and got the battery to last two full days
Changed the model — different appearance, different structure, different circuit-board layout. He could sue me all he liked; it would never stick
Changed the market — he wanted a few hundred units to test the water; I went straight to buyers in Europe and America and shipped five thousand in one go

Those 500 samples I made were nothing special. After I handed them over, we never spoke again.

The watch-phone I built came nine years before the Apple Watch.
A lot of people think doing business means reading a pile of books and knowing a pile of technology. Let me tell you: no. Back then I knew nothing about mould design and nothing about circuit engineering. But I knew two things: how to ask, and how to change.
That couple at the next table saying “this one's good” gave me confidence — this market really did exist.
5,000 dollars for a concept is worth it; but what you do with it after you buy it — that is the real skill.
